Myofascial Release for the Treatment of Sciatica
Sciatica pain refers to the pain of the longest nerve in your body. The sciatic nerve runs down the spinal cord to the buttocks and hip area and down the legs and thighs. Sciatica in particular is pain in this nerve which radiates out from the nerve to all different parts of the body. Sciatica can be very debilitating as it can affect all different parts of the body such as the legs, back, arms and shoulders. It is also a symptom of other problems such as a herniated disc in the spine. Although very uncomfortable, the pain can go away in four to eight weeks, but that’s a very long time to wait for people, especially those who have to work around it. Not only is there pain, but there can also be muscle weakness, numbness in the muscle, tingling in the muscle and/or a pins and needles sensation which can be very uncomfortable. Sciatica can also cause permanent problems like loss of feeling or movement in the legs and bowel movement. All in all, sciatica is not something that should have to be lived with if it doesn’t have to be.
Although there are many prescription drugs and physiotherapy as options, myofascial release is a treatment that is both gentle and effective. Because it goes after the tension and damage in the fascia, it can relieve all of the pains that the damaged nerve causes throughout the body instead of the pain in just a couple of places. This makes it more effective and far less stressful than drugs and has quicker and longer term effects than physiotherapy can have. Sciatica also responds well to self treatment and myofascial release can be done at home if you know what you are doing. Even if you do have to see a therapist, the setting in which you will be receiving the treatment is more comfortable and homelike than a doctor’s office or gym. Myofascial release is also gentler than the usual stretches diagnosed for sciatica and so causes less stress while having the same healing effect as the harder stretches and harsher drugs.
Myofascial release is almost the perfect remedy for sciatica as the healing effects will target all of the massive nerve instead of just pieces of it. It’s gentle, effective, and will remove any worries about long term damage and allow you be relieved of the pain much quicker than if it was left alone to heal. Why should you live with such pain when there’s an effective treatment on the market, just waiting for you?
